I have a few questions on scraping my Abalone rosette. I have installed it and glued with ca. After reading one the posts here where someone sanded the same rosette and had to deal with black dust I chose to scrape it. But never having done this before. I chose to scrape along the rosette instead of with the grain of the top. As a result I have a few cross grain marks in one location some other issue with pulled up fibers.

What is the best technique for scraping the rosette? Should I only scrape with the top grain to avoid this issue? Will sanding take care of the cross grain marks and when I am ready to sand the top for finishing should I avoid sanding the rosette so to avoid the black dust?

Eric,
I had used a scraper and also had some scratches on the soundboard around the rosette to contend with. For the most part I got rid of those with some additional scraping. I also used a random orbit sander on the top and I'm sure I touched the rosette area, but I didn't experience any of the black dust problem. Perhaps I was lucky.

Thanks for the responses. I did see the Balsanova's post with the J-185 rosette which is why I chose to scrape it instead of sanding. So I will do a little more scraping on the top and sand it when its time to finish.

Where are you afraid of the black dust getting to? I usually scrape down the purflings, and the abalone is inlayed a couple thousands below the top. This allow clean up with sanding without having to do too much sanding on the shell. You won't get black dust in the shell, it is solid. If you think there is, blow it out with a gentle blast of air.
