Just a bad bit, I guess - I stuck another one in the router and it worked fine.

NOW - to fix the slot from the incident, I had to widen it 1/8" on both sides of the truss rod. It was the only way.

Have I compromised the integrity of the neck, or will a lamination of some 1/8" strips strengthen sufficiently?


Any tips on that wide slot will be appreciated.

I've also never seen anything like that before, I can't imagine the force required to to bend a router bit at the shank.
Firstly I would suspect a defective bit, whose make was it? And secondly, did you have the bit deep into the collet or was it protruding maybe too far?

Strips glued in either side of the truss rod will work just fine, I think you had a lucky escape.

The bit was deep in the collet, and it came from a set of 4 bits from Home Depot for $20. I had my hands on a single Diablo bit for $20 then spotted these and thought I'd give them a try. Just checked, it is the Ryobi straight bit router set.

Any thoughts on the brand? I'm definitely returning them.

Well I bought a Ryobi random orbital sander and tbh it's absolute pants, doesn't come close to my old AEG. Ryobi is one of the cheapest makes here in the UK.
