A wood pickguard is an interesting thought 'cause I have some 1/64" to 1/16" aircraft (birch) plywood on hand. My daughter is a very talented artist and she could embellish the guard with something appropriate. However, I'd need to protect her work (lol).

Ditto clear ---- Actually none first choice/option -- if the pure acoustical potential is the main concern.
As for the wood PG the one's I have made are 5 ply thin veneer (Constantine's) laminates with the edge bevel cut to reveal the layers.

I don't use one anymore either. I look at the plastic one supplied by Martin for my first Jumbo, and compare it to two others I finished with EM6000. Those others are daily users by their owners, and show nary a scratch in the same area as the jumbo pickguard. People ask if I am worried about the finish. I tell them if you can make them look like this (Glen Hansard's Guitar):
Then I am honored, and you're doing fantastic.
