I love the look of the top and how the grain runs

Second that. I admire the carving you do, but I don't think I ever will make a violin.
Unless someone can play it proper, the sound of a violin scares me.
But you're doing a nice job. The kids will love it!

Thanks guys.
This redwood is kind of rift cut.
Some of the boards I had were near perfect quarter sawn but I resawed those for guitar tops.
I too like how the grain looks. I'll just put a clear varnish on it so the grain will show nicely

This project was on hold over the holidays but got back to it a couple weeks ago.
The corpus is off the mold and about done with the linings installed.

The top and back have most of the outside arching done and the putflings are installed.
The redwood is very "chippy" and with the squirlly grain a bit of a pain to carve. I like the look but I may not use it again...too fussy.
So I'm still working the arching as once the recurve is cut in on the purfling line then it all has to be blended back into the arch.

Then the inside arching will begin.
No more done on the neck at this point.

I'm about ready to get back on the first violin and start the finish process.

The cradle I bought but I made up a swivel mount so I can rotate and index it.

Started hollowing out the back today
I drilled depth holes to render various thickness to the plate....Will carve down to the bottom of these holes them will have about a millimeter of material left to scrape and sand down to the final plate thicknesses.
