Hey Dave,
Can you put a thin veneer over the top....any contrasting wood or use the same (hog?).
That will cover the chip out for a new look

Kevin, that was my first thought as well and in fact I tried it but could not make it look 'right'. If I could turn it into a design feature and make the defect into an actual plus, I will try it.

I'm coming to the perspective that the "art" of the luthier is learning to make problems look like features.

How about using dowels made of the same wood as the head stock veneer. Make them large enough to cover the tear out. Design opportunity!
