Of course, there are approximately a bazillion gits out there with no fancy soundhole bracing that have done just fine.
Sometimes I just like to try different stuff, if there seems to be some logic behind it.
For my students, I have them use 1/4" x 1/4" s/h braces in place of the thin strips - but I don't have them running through the UTB. It seems like a good compromise.

Funny, The bracing according to the Taylor V-Class layout does not have any support above the upper tranverse brace. My latest OM has this layout. The area is quite floppy.
Taylor thinks they get away with it. That is the opposite of all the above.
What to think about this? Well, I don't know. I go with the experiment.
Looking at the floppyness of my OM, my feeling is that some extra structure around the soundhole would be better.
I let you know if it goes south. Ha!
