I should add that I used a dowel through the stack of pieces that made up the heel, after the initial gluing. A lot depends upon the stack holding together, no matter how the butt joint is executed. I doubt the neck you received has this insurance. You will know if you remove the provided heel cap. If you use it as is, you are depending on the joints being good ones.
Edit: Just looked at the pix again. It appears the only joint is between the fingerboard support piece and the other piece that drops down (goes up in the pix). Because that joint has a larger surface than the smaller ones I used, there are fewer reasons to worry about it.

Thanks John.
The heel is one piece so you don't think I have to "dowel" it?

We dowel the heels on all our glued up necks -- $.02

John, if it were mine I would use a dowel. I am timid when it comes to neck/body joints - the consequences of failure are great and installing a dowel so easy.
