I won't vouch for the safety of this approach, but if you have a bandsaw, it might now be too much trouble to build a jig like this:

i just don't have enough band saw to do that. But if I buy the billets, I should be able to find someone close by that can do the re-sawing, and that jig looks like the right way to go. Thanks.
