Before I join the halves. And I don't try to get to close because it is still a little rough and will have some swirl marks. Also it is not totally uniform thickness coming off the SafeTPlaner so you need to leave a little room for that as well. Practice on some scrap.

Ken, what do you use the sliding compound miter saw for?
Its does everything our radial arm saw could do -- including precise cross cutting. Standard miter saws are especially limited in that regard.
