I ordered a 3" RO sander from my Taiwan supplier of spray guns. I used this with 3M's Purple Finishing Disc, starting with 1000, then 1500

A fellow FWW writer from a while back by the name of Chris Minninck (who worked at 3M) once told me that if you want the best performing abrasive products, buy ones made for the auto industry. This combination leveled sanded the best of any system I've used so far.

I am doing a video of it right now that's part of a larger length video on Finishing an acoustic guitar with NC lacquer that should be ready early Summer.

EDIT: FWIW, over the last year I settled on wet sanding to P1500 and using Menzerna ATOL6 then P175. I found the 204 dulled the finish after wet sanding to 1500.

Do you use the 3" sander for sanding the unfinished wood as well or is it just for leveling the finish? Also how much does it vibrate compared to an electric one? My hands just don't like all that vibration anymore. Thanks.

I am sure Jeff will respond -- generally speaking the electrics are much harsher than the air drive -- which have a small smooth operating turbine. As for your hands -- this sensitivity is rather common and a huge industrial safety problem which can get progressively worse, on the production floor the issue was resolved for many by using special gloves --- they really work well.

Ken, thanks for the input. I actually have a pair of gloves like those that I sometimes wear if I am working with my angle grinder for any amount of time. It doesn't take long though for the pins, needles and vibrating sensations to kick in. I avoid working with my Makita palm sander if at all possible. I will be upgrading some of my bigger tools this summer and I think an air sander may have to be included into the mix as well. To many years and to much abuse.

I can bring in some of these for those that are interested. I really like it and the size is absolutely perfect for guitars. It requires no oiling so you won't contaminate surfaces if using waterbase. Also has a speed control. I start with the P1000 3M paper #00909 (or P1200 #00908) then the P1500 #00907. I get the paper from amazon.

If you've never used pneumatic sanders, they are very easy on the hands and this one is also great for bare wood sanding. 3" sandpaper isn't widely available but there's plenty of places that sell it online. It comes with a flat hard grip back pad, and I recommend you get several 3" soft interface pads so you can sand non flat surfaces like the waist.
