Glad you posted it, I did not read past your equation and it was fun working out what your equation did. Then I noticed you explained it.

Huh? Are you guys from outer space? Just kidding of course, but I am super impressed because, even though I am very very super super smart, I did not take math past algebra II and plain old geometry. At the time I had no need for such advanced figuring. :)
Dave, glad you got your answer.

Yeah Kevin, when I took trig it was all about figuring how wide a river was without being able to cross it with a tape - a skill every educated person was supposed to find invaluable after graduation.

I'm still trying to figure, if I leave Chicago at 10pm and travel a constant 100mph, and Charlize Theron leaves San Francisco at 10pm at 40mph, where and when we will meet and I will be snubbed.

It doesn't matter where and yes! sorry ...
Kevin those function are just fancy names for the relationship between two of the side lengths of a right triangle relative to the angle. Tangent for example is opposite / adjacent. In the old days with a table of values it lets you get the length of all of the sides if you know one side and the angle. The computer and calculators makes it easy because it does the function for you.

My first calculator cost $300 and all it would do is add, subtract, multiply and divide, and they wouldn't let me use it in class either!

When I was a math major I had a top of the line Post slide rule that I was not allowed to use in class either to do what I called "grunge math". So I switched majors.
