Lower quality even half the price.

I've cut several dual blanks from billets that were 30" long, and had very little excess. I don't see how 24" works., Maybe if you were doing a flat bolt on?
Don't discount Sapele. It is less expensive, a little heavier then Honduras, but nice to work with and very very stable.

The 24" does lay out just fine, perhaps when I give it a try I will see the error of my ways.
Sapele is my first choice here actually.

Well then go for it. If it works, I'll buy 24" billets from now on too! I sure prefer the look of the solid neck, especially at the heel

Kevin - the bottom of the two pix shows the outlines that I copied by laying a neck on the mdf, the tenon and all. You have me worried now - congratulations :-) - but do you see any reason that the 24" would NOT work for solid necks??

I am with Kevin, It looks to me that you are laying it out with a fairly finished neck blank, so you are leaving almost no room for margin. When I cut them out they look nothing like the one I see in your picture. It may be that I am a little sloppy with my cutting but after cutting and then planing the head stock and often even the fret board surface of the neck my nut line moves either toward the head stock or towards the heel. I like to have some margin. Looking at your layout the nut line would be critical for the top of the head stock, the curve of the heel and the heel itself.

You may be OK that tight. I am not sure that I would be.

A little off topic -- but, built up necks really need to be "spray tinted/shaded" to make the joints a non-issue. Taylor necks have block heels and "finger jointed" head stocks --- who knew?
