I really like that slightly mortised butt heel arrangement -- I've tried that myself with excellent results, other might want to consider this option --- Taylor used this method for a long time prior to their super CNC'ed version

Clever use of an angle drill guide ($20). I use my drill press and hand turn but that drill guide gave me an idea for other uses.

I noticed that in the pictures some of the threaded inserts are installed with the slotted end used to drive the insert into the wood, as if it's a screwdriver slot. When I was building a neck, I was taught that the slot ain't for screwdrivers, it's for thread cutting into the wood, so's the wood don't split. Slot first into the wood. Same conversation told me that the threaded insert is driven by a bolt and a jam nut/nuts. Is using the unslotted end to drive into the wood contributing to splitting?

The fine threaded inserts are designed to be installed with the tool shown above and the slot is on the outer end. The coarse threaded inserts go in slot first -- that is a thread cutting edge. Splits will happen no matter what end first, if the tenon is not supported on all sides as in the photo above.

McMaster Carr doesn't specify course vs fine thread on the inserts they sell, can you tell by comparing the photos if these are the appropriate course thread?

Wrong one --- I think LMII has the proper inserts individually
