Removing the backstrip with a 1/4 down spiral bit worked beautifully - great care was taken to precisely position the router/alignment rail. I'll post a photo of the new backstrip this evening.

I'm sure you all know by now, but I like to keep my tools sharp.

I installed the backstrip by routing about halfway through the already joined back seam. Once glued and dry I plane down the over height strip with a low angle block plane. For this I use a 38 degree bevel, with the 12 degree bed giving a 50 degree angle of attack. When properly sharpened the fine curls just pour out of the plane.

There should be plenty inlay left - it started at .125" thick, and is inlayed only about 1/2 the thickness of the back, so I likely removed about .080" +/-
