I own a GS Mini, on the advice of my instructor. Bought it a month ago. Grows on you, it does. And it sure fits the lap better than the Dreadnought I made, but it doesn't sound as nice. The short scale is very comfortable for this student guitarist.

I read through Kathy Matsushita's documentation on her GS Mini-inspired project. One attribute of the Taylor original is the deeply dished laminated back, a shape that I don't know if we could copy with solid materials and ordinary bracing. Does anyone have any idea as to whether the 'ordinary' proportions of the plans-built guitar would detract from the Taylor original's volume and (my word) resonance? Or improve on it?

Thanks!

I am planning to make a guitar with a 10 foot radius on the back which is quite a change from using a 15' dish. I am following a design that uses normal wood and normal braces with 10' radiuses. I am not sure if moving away from the designed back curve would be better or worse. But I would guess that the same guitar built one way or the other would sound different. Especially if the back is thickness and braced such that it can be part of the sound.

I purchased the GS mini plan, from Ga. Luther supply so far have built three instruments, two mahogany and one maple these were gifts for my great-grand daughters . these plans are very precise and produce a very nice guitar If you want a small instrument for small hands and small people this will fill the bill. Makes an excellent finger Picking piece. .

Robert, thanks for speaking up. I figured, among other things, that this would be the way I'd get something like my Mini with a 1 3/4" neck, which Taylor isn't about to provide.

I realize that individuality probably trumps everything else, but having said that, did you have the opportunity to compare the sound output of the clones as compared to an original Taylor GS Mini?

Thanks!
