For the time being, you can get the job done with the smaller motor, but it will take longer. My 10-20 sander has a 1.5HP motor and it does just fine. Like Ken said, you need to take small bites off the wood with each pass. Trying to do otherwise is a recipe for disaster. Maybe not disaster, but it is a recipe for something not good. Clogged paper, scorched wood, burned out motor, etc.

Thanks guys. When Ken posted all those very very very slowly. That was too much for my little old heart to bear. I went to the pawnshop today and bought a Craftsman Compressor with a 3 horse motor. Gave the compressor and tank and hose to a buddy and took the motor off. He has a large shop vac and he's talking about hooking me up a dust collection system. So I did not want to be underpowered. Now I run the risk of being overpowered. But it still runs at 3480 rpm's. So guess I should reduce it to 1700 as well? Please don't tell me I have too much motor. My choice was it or a 4 hp.

Yes slow it down -- you will not be over powered.

Ok cool Fedex just showed up with my adhesive backed Velcro and my sand paper with the hooks the hooks to get that part of it done. My fine thread rod I ordered has come in. Got to go pick it up this PM. Then stop by Home Depot pick up the necessary wood. Already have the Formica to glue to the plywood. Spent a bunch of time last week running things down. Got the bigger motor. The only thing is pulleys and a belt. Shouldn't have much problem from here on out. Looking forward to getting started on my first build with my MM.
Got an EMail from StewMac this morning with a specialized sanding Gizmo for only 175.00 don't think I'll go for it though. Some of you rich guys might want one. Hey it'll look good in that new shop. Lol
