I also do the Teeter trick but with a router bit. Set it to just cut the perimeter at the required depth say .015"-.020" and then just route in the required area. Then with a sanding block feather the edge till it all blends in over a width of about 2".

You, my friend, are a router God!!! If I get within 10 feet of a completed box with a router, hell will in some form happen.

The pin holes are a little safer method since you don't have to be concerned with the base tilting as material is removed.
