You should use a very sharp chisel -- I have used a Dremel with a 1/4" bit but suggest a lot of practice first. You wan to end up with about 3/32" that actually touches the body
Okay, I can do the chisel....One more clarification; Regarding using the small
block with 150grit sandpaper to sand the top flush to the neck fingerboard
surface. Does the sanding area include the portion where the tenon inserts
into the body? I know that sanding the fingerboard is a no no but I wasn't
sure about that small area.

Thank you!

Now don't get ahead of yourself here -- do you uderstand why and when you do the sound board sanding? Its to create the straight line along the finger-board plane --- when needed. Not an appearance thing. Did you make the fingerboard simulator tool?

Yes, i just read your directions again. I will taper the cheeks for a
tight fit and so that I can take advantage of the angle the neck
supplier created.

I did make the fretboard simulator. After I've done the taper, I'll check the
to see if there is a space where the simulator meets the sound hole and that
will tell me if I need to sand the top. If I do need to sand then I use index cards
to gauge the space, drop the neck by that amount and then carefully sand the
top area to meet the fretboard....

Reading is so helpful when you actually do it and understand!
