The Trance is along the lines of the FRAP pickup used by Neil young and others, no longer made. It stands for Flat Responce Audio Pickup, combined with the AER (surely no point in considering pickups without considering amplification) which has a very flat, neutral response, the sound is very, very close to the acoustic sound of the guitar.
I did a lot of pickup research and it seems to me the essential problem is that, no matter how good the pickup/internal mic setup is, it is still picking up the sound far too close to the guitar, meaning a lot of the finger/pick/plucky sounds are amplified a lot more than you want. You really want the guitar sound as experienced several feet away and then amplified, ie. a normal microphone setup with all the inherent problems. that that brings.
my 2 pence.
