When Mario Maccaferri moved to the US he and John Monteleone became good friends and they both considered the Hot Club to be the continuation of the Maccaferri tradition, X-Braces and all, I assume.

Monteleone originally got a college degree in music. His range of interests - and successful innovations - in instrument building is astonishing. The guy on the forum Dave referenced on page 1 owns one of Mateleone's archtop beasts (as well as a Hot Club) and says the archtop is "a challenge". There is more than a ring of truth to that.
