My friend is laying some planks of this "California Chestnut" as flooring in a high-dollar residence, so I'm thinking that there is another, proper name for this stuff because it is very hard, very straight, unlike chestnut as we know it.

"California Chestnut" ? Not like our 'Yorkshire chestnut' this side of the pond then :P
Latin botanical names are really the only the way to go in my opinion.
Horse chestnut - Aesculus hippocastanum Spanish or sweet chestnut - Castanea sativa
Dave - maybe he's using a generic term for the wood; like 'mahogany' is used in the timber trade for anything that is grown in the tropics and is vaguely redish brown!
