I have not set up the safe-t-planer since I got my drum sander, and figured out how to thickness my headstocks at the drill press.
Go get um.

Dave -- I believe you are not alone, I know some have had good results with this tool, but I suspect there is good reason Wagner no longer sells them. $.02

Thats all great advise from Robert. I burned wood on my first attempts as well but found I was attempting to take too much wood off at a time. Very Very small increase in depth increments until you get the hang of it. The sandpaper shim advise works as well.
Its a great little tool but its very important to stop and sharpen your cutters fairly frequently--when you smell wood burn would be a good time.

I just got my jet 10-20 delivered so the wagner has competition from now on but I'm sure i will use it from time to time
