Re: router bits and chipping
Peter, often people are too impatient when it comes to drilling. What happens, they let the drill rotate too fast. The drill can't cut and gets too hot, end of story for the bit.

Re: router bits and chipping
The new rig works fine. Stays steady, goes up and down easily, the new laminate trimmer is easily adjustable etc. (Bosch Colt - found a good deal on one. In for a penny, in for a pound, eh?)
There was some smoke!! as I was cutting the channel on the back. Perhaps the bit is not sharp enough? What could cause that?
Is the bit ruined now? Gads.

Smoke?
1 Bit dull
2 Rotating too fast
3 Going too carefull or staying on one spot.
I use a Makita RT0700C
position 2.5 that is about 15.000 revs.

And we all know somebody who sails along in blissful ignorance unaware of the adventures (trials and persecutions?) that confound us.
Is Dave's problem one as simple as an inherently chippy piece of wood, no fault of the tools or their operator?

Could be the case with the chipping, but an inherently smoking piece of wood?

Re: router bits and chipping
Ok, in reading the instructions for the Colt, it was stated that the larger the bit, the slower the speed. They recommended a speed of 1, 2, or 3 for large bits 4,5,6 for smaller bits.
I set the router for 3.
Now I'm looking at the manual again, and it states that the Colt ranges from 16K - 30K rpm.
Do you think that setting 1, at 16k, is probably the best speed for this bit?
Thanks
