Chris - how can a compensated nut have any effect on a fretted string? Or if a capo is being used?

Yes --- Dave's questions are excellent and I also would like to hear the science and math involved ie, why is adding to the width of the nut not the same as moving the take off point back on the saddle?
"is worth the effort?" is in the name of the thread because in any event, the conversaton is not that nut compesation is the
intonation silver bullet but rather what is gained by the extra step -- perfection is still a moving target dependent on many variables. Good thread here --- click full version

By the way - if I was a little obscure - by 'that guy' I meant me. :-)
