I've often found that the first (and, sometimes, the second) application of Tru-Oil looks "splotchy" or uneven. The duller areas seem to occur where the wood absorbs the TO more readily than in other areas. Once I've applied three or more coats, the TO seems to form a surface film with a smooth appearance. Once the surface film is complete, I may add several additional coats of TO to the back and sides, but will only add one to the soundboard in order to minimize damping. FWIW.

Thanks Hans. Good thing to keep in mind.

I used torrified wood once, it was a pain and in the end I was not wowed by it characteristics. It sounds like you are moving forward now with good results.

We'll see what it sounds like. It is more difficult to work with. And I'll have to see if the bridge stays on!

So - the TO finish worked just fine on the back and sides.

BUT - the TO will not stick to the torrefied WRC. So I had to remove the TO from the top, and am refinishing with a different product that is working well. In this case, Watco tung-oil 'one step' finish. This is not straight tung-oil, it has other additives, but tung oil is the base. Goes on nicely, recoat after 24 hours, no sanding between coats, and it seems to level itself. I like it, and am just building a few coats for a bit of gloss.

Ok, the bridge will have been gluing for 24 hours at 4 pm this afternoon.
So - tomorrow morning will be the first stringing-up.
Then we will see if the *9&^97%@#% thing stays on. Pardon my language. :-)

It will be fun to hear it for the first time, as you all have experienced..
