I have had a bit walk out before and do the kind of damage you saw on your slot, but never seen it bent like that! Glad you didn't get hurt. You won't have a problem on your neck if you glue in some inserts. I have done it before. Think about using carbon fiber? Thats basically how its used...wider slots, or separate slots for the CF....don't see how theres much difference whether you use hardwood or cf. Think you'll be ok.

Nothing - just asked 'not workin' for ya?', looked at the bit and gave me a store credit. I mentioned that I thought the manager of that tool section should think twice about Ryobi, and got the thousand yard stare.
HD is heavily invested in Ryobi.
