Make any size dowel you want or need.
You might even figure out how to turn a guitar on a lathe. Wouldn't that be something.

I have a lathe but I think the indestructible approach may be more accurate, especially on a long dowel. If you have a machinist lathe, well that be the best.

Agreed I would have trouble making an even diameter dowel on a typical wood lathe setup.
For smaller dowels one can always pound them through holes in a metal plate.
