When I drilled a hole in my HF arbor press to accept the StewMac fret caul, drilling was no problem at all. A bit of cutting oil, low speed, and there's the hole. A pilot hole is a dandy idea. My HF arbor press is right heavy, but it looks to be about as low-grade as cast iron gets. Drilled really easily. I think new drill bits are a good idea...I have no idea if name-brand presses are made of sterner stuff.
