Thanks Tim. that's very interesting. I've always wondered about the effect of all those triangles in the double X. Guess I should have known, or guessed.

Not sure what was the worst acoustic guitar design idea -- double "X" or the adjustable ceramic saddle plastic bridge?
Back to about the "Carruth scraper"-- I am sure that it is fine tool, but for me the reality is that I've been making musical instruments and fine furniture for over five decades without a hollow ground scraper (skaters edge) scraper. I would recommend learning how to sharpen a card/cabinet scraper properly, makes life as a wood worker easier. The fact is you'll be able to make scrapers of all sizes and shapes from throw away saw blades. This is a good tutor

As for precision -- I use cabinet scrapers to even level finish on flat surfaces.
