mahogany laminated wood

Post by Beau J » Thu May 23, 2013 8:24 pm

his weekend I was cleaning up the shop area and i had a mohogany door that has been laying arounf so i decided to cut it up and see if i could come op with some usable pieces for guitar parts. as it turns out the panels are solid but the rest of the door is laminated. can necks be crafted from laminated wood. i really dont now just hate to throw it out. just thought i would toss this out for the sake of discussion

Not a good idea for a number of reason -- first it is likely Luan which is very low grade Mahogany (maybe not?). The layers are alternating grain which is bad news, no telling what material is in the core layers? The glue will dull your tools and the end product might not look very good. Martin makes necks out of plywood so it certainly can be done, however that material is designed for that purpose. But if you just using it for practice why not?
