Glue sequence for tortoise binding and plastic purfling

Post by Dave Bagwill » Mon Feb 27, 2012 6:19 pm

Would I use the same glue for tortoise binding and plastic purfling? Would it be prudent to do purfling first, or, if it is the same glue, do both at the same time?
Thanks

I do both at the same time, I first coat the edges with a wash coat of shellac, cut the binding and purfling rebates. I"ve used LMI's binding cement and 3M's plastic trim cement with good results, both dry quickly and are easy to clean up. After scraping, I go back and run a small bead of CA glue along the edges just to be sure everything is tight, I do this before my final sanding so that any small gaps will be filled before sanding. One final note, the best scraper that I've found for bindings is the Bahco brand scraper, it's a carbide bladed scraper that I used in my cabinet shop for years to scrape glue, I put a fresh blade in it and was surprised on what a good job it did scraping bindings. Most woodworking supply places carry the brand.

I appreciate the advice and I will check out that scraper!

Two questions: to fill any gaps, do you use a thicker CA? I thought I read somewhere that CA can dissolve plastic?

Also - have you posted your pic at the 'shoot the breeze' thread ? :-)

I just use the thin, you shouldn't need the Medium if you did the first step right. CA doesn't melt the plastic binding. Some of my guitars are posted in the Gallery, I just shot a whole series of pictures of the guitars last night and will try to get them posted as soon as I figure out how to use PhotoBucket better.

Ok I guess while I'm waiting for the $$ to fall out of the sky for a new camera, I'll ask about the tortoise binding you used Dave...was it celluloid? That's all I can fined and not much of that at most of the popular outlets...not sure I want to attempt using celluloid or not...will what you used shrink and distort like old stuff did? I would assume I've answered my own question..hummm...remember that old TV show "Lost in space"? oooookaaay...what planet ARE we on? WMW...
