kalamazoo style soundhole binding

Post by mike-p » Fri Apr 05, 2013 5:29 am

so my l-00 isn't going to have a rosette, just white binding like this the pic. Going to use the same white plastic binding as for the sides so it's currently plenty wider than the SB, gonna cut/sand it down. Can't figure how to glue it though, the only barmy idea i've had is to put a balloon in the sound hole to press the binding outwards and then file/sand/scrape it flush? Err, and better ideas?

thanks all.

Hey Mike, Mike here, maybe just carefully applied tape would hold well enough for the glue to dry?

You could also put a can of the approximate same diameter in the whole and shim around the circumference of the can.

Curl the material on the edge of the bench to get it to the approximate shape. Seal the top to help prevent the tape from pull out slivers and you should be fine. I'd slice the binding to close to sound -board thickness so the tape does not tilt it -- the problem will be making sure its flush to the wood edge. I have never done one like this, but I don't see why tape will not work.

Thanks guys, do I need the fancy blue tape? I don't really understand sealing the top although I've seen it referred to, what do I use? I think the tape plus balloon will do the job

This will work better, but maybe the tape will do it.
