I usually do it after assembly of top and back. Actually I like doing it this way. Why should I even ponder doing it differently.
Why'd the chicken cross the road? I am NOT insane!

Re: When do you intall the end graft/wedge?
Well whatever. :-) Here are a number of very boring pix (9) of how I do it now. Including the fabulously complicated jig that taxed to the utmost the resources of the Cray supercomputer I have in my other shop - usually dedicated to SETI seeking.
But this does give an easy, very easy, and easily repeatable method that does not involve chiseling out a perfect slot for a perfect end wedge, cleaning up glue or anything else like that. Just sayin' :-)
You only make the jig once, out of scrap, from that point it ain't no thang.
Just scrap pieces - do not have any rims on hand to use for illustrative purposes.

- Accurate center line on the mdf and on the endblock. Scraps were used throughout this.

- 1" marks on left side; marked the middle 5" or so in pencil; scribed the angle I will always be using onto the mdf and penciled in the scribe marks.

- Clamped some straight mdf strips along the scribed lines, drill up through the bottom mdf, made the top holes a little larger so there's wiggle room. Washers and wingnuts.

- Inserted the endwedge material, screwed down the mdf strips, used them as saw guides.

- Well, there it is.

- Inserted the sides and butted them right up to the center line on the jig. Tighten down the mdf strips just as done with the wedge material. Saw the sides.

- Remove the sides, insert the end block and align with the c/l of the jig; apply glue to the block and/or sides; insert the sides to the scribe lines for the wedge and use the mdf strips as clamps.

- When dry, take off the upper clamps and glue in your end wedge.

Clever, you are gluing in the end wedge before you glue on the end block. That should be OK as long as the sides are nicely and squarely trimmed. I wonder if you could add a guide to the jig to index the top of the two sides to keep them in square and in line when you insert the sides.

Actually John I glue the sides onto the block first (after the wedge shape has been cut out) then glue in the wedge.
Yeah, keeping everything straight is the key, the rest is easy.

So you use the jig also as the clamp to glue on the end block?
