Squareneck Resonator Build (Amplified)

Post by Dennis in Anola » Mon Mar 25, 2013 7:01 pm

I have a need for an amplified Dobro so I recently bought myself a Beard square neck Dobro kit. I intend to build it according to plan rather than modify it to an open box design. I do have a very nice acoustic Dobro but I don't want to modify it for electronics. Anyway, I have just started this project today. I have yet to decide on what pickup I will install so I'll do what I can on this project until I make that decision and can close up the body. My next project will likely be a Martin kit for my son.

Here's the start of the rim construction.

I'm looking forward to this log -- know there are a couple of other members thinking about constructing a "reso"

I managed to get the rim kerfing done today. It's traditional rather than reverse kerfing. The kerfing is triangular in section and I had a minor problem keeping it in line with the top & bottom edges. It wanted to slip upwards on me. Nothing the edge sanding won't take care of though.

I much prefer Ken's reverse kerfing with parallel sides. It's much easier to keep in place while the glue sets for me and it looks more professional IMHO. But that's just me.Anyway, here's the obligatory clothes pin shot.

Been working on the cone basket kerfing. It's coming along nicely. Must remember when glueing the basket into the body to point one hole directly at the neck so I can bolt the neck on later.

A couple more pictures ...... the top is 1/4" thick. I'm sure I could stand on it. The next job is glueing in the basket from the back. I has to be perfectly centered in the top hole.

The basket has been glued into the body. I'm using the KMG sanding bar to level the basket kerfing with the body sides.
