ddietz wrote:Your results with the brushing lacquer look very nice Jack. I used the Deft brushing lacquer on my 2nd build, and had to learn how to lay down the finish (as opposed to the brushing out technique that tends to be used for a varnish). The brush I had the least success with was the most expensive one (a hog bristle) and the one that cost $12 worked much better.
Photos of my KMG builds are in the gallery section.
On the mahogany neck of my 1st guitar I pore-filled with zpoxy and then used a satin wiping poly. It turned out great.

The second guitar neck is curly maple and I used a polymerized tung oil sealer followed by several coats of polymerized tung oil. Again, great results.

I want to reiterate something that Tony said - while your guitar body is drying/curing the lacquer, make sure it isn't touching anything or it will pick up the texture of that (towel, foam pad, etc.). Yes, I learned that the hard way.

Hello Ddietz ,I looked at your guitars in the gallery, They are beautiful, I really like the Jumbo. The finish is awesome, I know it probably took a while to level and polish to that luster. What is your favorite finish method so far? I can't believe how nice some of these 1st and second builds are on this forum , lots of talent. Nice Work and thanks for the tips , Jack.

Got out in the shop today for a couple hours. Decided to jump in and do the headstock inlay as I have been putting it off. I got the inlay from DePaule supply, great service and fast shipping. I used an air powered 1/8'' pencil die grinder with a router base the carbide inlay bits that Ken had posted about. The inlay was in 9 pieces, that interocked with each other. I found my newly purchased Optivisor to be of great assistance.I am happy with it overall, there are some gaps but the CA glue kind of masks them.

Nice job with the inlay! One of these days, I am going to have to admit to myself that my vision ain't what it used to be and get myself an optivisor. I don't wear or need glasses, but when it comes to this close up, tight tolerance inlay stuff, I just can't focus well enough up close to get it done as well as you have done here.

Well I don't have eyes in the back of my head, so that makes sense. But don't tell my kids!

Yes I have decent eyes but need to wear reading glasses nowthat my up close vision is going away. The optivisor is great for this kind of work. Try one you will love it, I saw a tip on a stewmac video where they bolt on another set of lenses below the one already on the visor, kind of like bi-focals They used a 2.0 lens up top and the 1.5 lens was directly below it for a wider field of vision, pretty neat idea.

Next question , I have these little clovers in Green abalone , This guitar is a gift for my girlfriends son's 30th birthaday ( Irish / Philadelphia Firefighter) . Should I inlay these on the headstock as pictured??? Or leave then off. Suggestions and ideas ?? welcome.

Thanks , Jack.
