modifying files

Post by peter havriluk » Thu Feb 14, 2013 12:15 am

One of the tools mentioned in a link Mr. Bagwell shared with us demonstrates a file clamped into a block at an angle so's I can consistently file fret ends at an angle. Appeals to me and looks easily buildable, and I'm going to need to do that task.

So...I'd like to purchase a straight 6-inch file, trim off the tang, and make the tool. Is a hacksaw blade up to the challenge of lopping off the end of a file? Any particular kind of hacksaw blade?

Thanks, folks.

The tang doesn't have to be cut off - I've been using one for years with the tang. From the KMG site:

About half way down the page.

Peter, I don't think you'd make much headway using a hacksaw, however, on some files the tangs are not hardened so you may be able to do it.
If you have a bench grinder, grind through on the edge of the wheel. If no bench grinder, you can use a small 4" hand held grinder like the type that HF sells for around $20.

I knew that angle grinder would come in handy for something...

Ahhh, you have one. GREAT! That is quick. I use it to cut down chisels for my wooden hand planes.

I stuck mine in a vice, the edge of the jaws right where I wanted to cut it off. Then I tapped it with a deadblow hammer and snapped it. rounded over the rough spot on my grinder.
So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.

Make sure you wear saftey glasses when grinding files. It can be very dangerous. Just a thought.
