Da Plane , but which one???
Da Plane , but which one???
I am looking for a good wood plane for general work like shaving end grain neck/tail blocks down, thinning brace wood etc. What would be a good plane for this work. What is your favorite most used plane. I saw the handmade ones on Da plane thread they are very nice too, wouldn't mind making one of those as well. Thanks , Jack

I use my LN low angle #4 block plane the most for the work you are describing.

Veritas standard block plane is my go-to.

The Veritas low-angle block plane is the one I use most, and would highly recommend. I have two blades for it; one 25 degree and one 38. Between the two of these irons you can handle most edge grain or end grain wood. The price at around $140 may seem high, but for a tool of this quality and precision it is not at all. I remember the time I showed a friend how I could take a one-thou slice from end-grain oak and create a surface smoother than he thought possible.
There is also a Veritas apron plane which is an ideal size for working on the neck and tail blocks if you are specifically looking to address that need and don't want to spend as much. I've tried it but don't own one, and it is quite precise and well-made too.

I have a variety of hand planes, and I am enjoying using my little wooden hand made ones, but I havet his LN small block plane that is just plain SAWEEEET. Not cheap, but I'm glad I bought it. And, yes, I just love to hold it. :>)
