This is a set-up and procedure that has served me well over the years. I do not subscribe to the idea that hammering the fret starting in the center is a good idea -- actually in my view it is the ruination of many a fret job and gets many new comers screwed up.

Re: Installing frets with a hammer
I have not updated the tutor, but in the case of fret installing I believe "bigger is better" I no longer use a tack hammer but rather a 16oz "smallish headed" hammer. I cover the head with tape to help prevent marring the frets. I found with the heavy hammer the frets are much easier to seat.

Re: Installing frets with a hammer
I use a hammer, and I hit and set the fret ends first, then finish by taping down the center area. I also use a corner file to slightly bevel the fret slot before hammering in. This has worked very well on all my fretboards thus far.

Some may ask why do that and the answer is:Kevininca wrote:I use a hammer, and I hit and set the fret ends first, then finish by taping down the center area. I also use a corner file to slightly bevel the fret slot before hammering in. This has worked very well on all my fretboards thus far.

Because the juncture between the bottom of the fret and the tang is NOT a perfect 90 degree angle and the bevel compensates for that allowing the fret to seat flush.
