Wow! Cool rosette!
I relly like the rosettes by Jason Kostal. He is a former apprentice of Ervin Somogyi and a great builder. If you have never seen one, they are outstanding!
Here is a pic:
The man puts a line of ebony between each piece!! If I had the patience, I might make one, but I do not! I will simply admire them from afar.
Gotta try that abalone rosette technique though Litmus! I have lots of abalone scraps laying around!

It's a small village with a few shops, a school and FOUR PUBS! :-) 20 miles from London.deadedith wrote: Off-topic: What is the country like in your area? Big city or small city or countryside or...?
Surrounded by farmland and woodland filled with oak, ash and beech etc. My workshop is steam powered lol

What a lovely countryside! Tell me: is a nice pint of a stout beer really better at room temp?
Also - you've not had any problems with the ca leaching through the shellac?

Tony...I bet you could produce a similar effect using the mosaic style of inlay....cutting those small peices of wood and puzzling them together like that, and then fill with black epoxy....how I did the pearl on black beauty. You will get a similar effect without having to cut the ebony peices as well.
So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.
