DIY Chisel plane

An enjoyable vid and maybe a quick worthwhile tool? Let us know what you think. Veritas sells one for a gazillion dollars. Or so.

On the same site as the chisel plane, there were directions and a vid on making some shell clamps - based on the Bernoulli spiral or some such thing. I whipped up a pair in 30 minutes out of scrap (I traced the shape off the computer screen onto a piece of white paper, cut it out and glued it to the first piece of scrap to cut out).

The clamps work! I love me some easy to make, workable tools..

Cool clamp. I can't watch the video from work but I want to see it because I don't have a gazillion dollars for the Veritas version.

Video link wasn't working this morning for this topic on the list at the site. Others worked. Sigh.

Peter, if the video link isn't working at the home site, it's on youtube. Do a youtube search for "DIY chisel plane".
Always have plenty of sandpaper; it's rough out there!

Hey Dave,
I couldn't view the video, but wondered if it was this type of plane they were making.
I just made this Sunday, my first. I've been wanting to make some planes for awhile now.
Pretty easy to make, and it works. I still want to shape it more, it is too boxy yet.
The chisel iron is from a cheap HF set, is easy to sharpen........ 3/4".
The inside is Cocobolo, the outside is stabilized Pecan....which just made it harder and, well, stable!
It is a nice color combination too.
Anyway, there will be more to come in different sizes.

I think this link to the video should work.

The chisel plane is different, but Wow! your wooden plane is awesome. Careful there Kevin, this could be a whole 'nuther addiction you've started. :) It will be a never-ending quest for precision and use of exotic varieties of wood. Excellent!
