If you ever get a chance to get to West Virginia you can go to the Gaudineer Scenic Area in the Monongahela National Forest where there is one of the only remaining stands of Ancient Native Virgin Red Spruce (often refereed to as Adirondack Spruce). See these beautiful trees in their full 450 year old full growth. It amazes me that in the late 1800's and early 1900's that thousands of acres were clear cut of ALL trees. This is akin to toppling the Redwoods of California. Trees of this age are a rare find these days.
