X Brace Junction

Post by Ray Ussery » Sun Jan 01, 2012 7:20 am

It would appear to me that all The Martins that I have come in contact with...and some "Others" utilize what looks like a "Bore Cleaning Patch" from .22-.30 caliber rifles/pistols or a piece of some sort of cloth soaked in "SOMETHING" to bind the joint together...what's going on here? The reason? what IS used? how is it "Glued"? Some of the older guitars have joints that look almost gray and they are hard as a rock.
Thanks, Ray:)

I've asked about this also, and have been told that any cotton cloth soaked in glue will do the job - the job being either to strengthen the joint and/or to cover up a sloppy joint. More than a few folks told me it was the latter.

Fabric, glue and I do not do well together so I close off the joint with a little piece of brace that I glue on top of the open brace and work the shape into the x-brace.

I am thinking that the splint maybe adds weight? I go for a very tight joint, to cut overlap I use this jig

And this intersection is the only place on the guitar I use epoxy glue.

Ken - do I understand then that you do not 'reinforce' the joint other than the epoxy? What is your reasoning?
