What do the factories use as a pore filler?

Post by Dave Bagwill » Fri Jun 29, 2012 3:00 pm

Pore filling is such a big deal, all kinds of new products, lots don't work that well - what does Martin or Taylor or other big factories use, and why don't we all use that?

Martin uses a product very similar to Pore O Pac from Behlens -- just about all the others including, Taylor, Larrvee, even Doolin use UV cure solvent free polyester products.

Also -- since the factories use a pre-cat formula top coating that dries/cures very fast they have less shrinkage overall, which helps to fill the tiny voids missed by the filler. All finishing systems are not created equal!

It's an interesting subject. What was done 70 years ago, I wonder? Maybe it's time for me to Google it.
Thanks for the info. I'm sure setting up to use UV -pre-cat-polyester/rayon/cotton blend would not be expensive. :-)

What is it about p-o-p that makes users look elsewhere?

I bet 70 years ago they used egg whites and sawdust or shellac/pumice and saw dust. Cavemen used dirt but their guitars were awful.
