We do a lot of veneer and bone on a daily basis -- to accomplish these tasks "safely" we us a sled (even with the power feed) -- so the material, be it wood, bone (hate the way that smells!) or whatever is hot glued to the sled once its to thickness the parts and glue can easily be popped off. We have the Harbor Freight digital calipers all around the shop -- check them with gauge blocks often -- never had one fail. As little as $10 each.
