Where do you get your neck blanks?
And for a stacked-heel 14 fretter, what size should I buy? 30x1x3?

Re: Good supplier of neck blanks?
Hibdonhardwood.com has the lowest prices for neck blanks of I remember correctly. I don't know what length you will need but you can measure a finished neck you have to figure it out.

Re: Good supplier of neck blanks?
I got two necks from Hanalei Moon Guitars for future builds. Best quality workmanship I've seen in necks and in the same price range as rougher necks. Come with neck blocks, bolts, and truss rods.
This is for necks cut out and pretty much ready to go, but if you mean just a block of wood, I don't know.

Dan not sure you used or seen KMG custom made solid and laminated necks -- but they are top of the line and less expensive then then all other guys.
Anyway -- for a stacked neck, the only requirement is that the board/wood is 1/4 sawn, flat and dried to about 7%-9% or so. (you don't need to pay for a "neck blank") I prefer to process a rough board or have the supplier surface one side. You likely know this already but the suppliers kill you with shipping on a single item, so buying enough for a few blanks will save much $$$ in the long run -- and if you decide you don't want or need it/them sell them on EBay!
I purchased nice material from West Penn, LL Johnson, Euphonon 2nds, Public Lumber in Detroit, off the rack at Woodcraft. I guess my point is the "ripoff" comes when the material is classified as a neck blank.

Re: Good supplier of neck blanks?
Yet another good reason to post questions here! I just assumed the 'blank' that scratch builders talked about was the $50 and up offerings at the various luthier houses.
Thanks for the info.
I can vouch for kmg necks - Ken provided me with a 12 fret, slotted headstock, with the exact amount of taper I was looking for, and it is a thing of beauty. I forget the price but it was noticeably less than others I looked into.

Pretty sure that's the right size. Ken's idea is a good one if you have the tools to cut and plane.deadedith wrote:And for a stacked-heel 14 fretter, what size should I buy? 30x1x3?
