Choosing back layout.

Post by Kenny Wiebusch » Sun Nov 03, 2024 2:36 pm

I normally put the most quarter sawn part of the back plates in the middle. This is not normally the prettiest option, just the strongest. Just looking for other builders view on this.

I go for the looks. Sometimes a sapwood center really adds some bling.

With the back I go for looks as well. I also use sap wood stripes when they look good.

Second that. When well thicknessed and braced, the strength of a back is not really an issue. At the moment I use a Madagascar Rosewood back with spalted sapwood in the middle. Very weak wood there, but impregnated with CA glue I did put it in the middle. Ha!
