Cutting purfling from veneer

Post by Jon Snider » Thu Feb 09, 2023 3:20 pm

I’m planning on cutting colored purfling strips from colored veneer. I’m not sure what would be the best way to do this. Clearly a table saw is out. I’m not sure I can keep it straight enough on a band saw considering the very thin size.

What do others here recommend?

Thanks. Jon

Hi Jon,
Respect, you trying to make purfling strips yourself. It is a hussle to cut clean strips 35" long. A bandsaw will probably cause chipping and rough sides.
You could glue some veneer sheets together and cut strips from there, but then they could be hard to bend.
Advise 1: Go try sawing, have fun and let us know.
Advise 2: Be kind to yourself, spend some bucks and buy them.
Good luck man

Have you got the binding cut to size already? The easiest way is to "veneer" (with TB3) the veneer to the binding stock, cutting it to size afterward. To cut the veneer by itself, I've used one of those long tool hanging magnets from Harbor Freight as a fence with a fine 1/8" blade to get thin strips, the more TPI the better.
