Hi, I’m finishing my latest Rosewood & spruce acoustic with nitro sanding sealer and top coat and I’ve just managed to rub through the top coat in a couple of places. The guitar had 3 coats of sealer before the top coats so my question is do I have to spray more sealer again to cover the bare wood or can I just spray more top coat over the whole guitar?

Hi Neil,
I think you try to make the finish too thin.
Usually I spay 2 thin coats of sealer and after that I spray 21 coats of top gloss laquer. 7 days of three coats.
Then lay it to rest for 3-4 weeks. That leaves you enough finish to sand it flat and polish all.
It is not about how much you put on, but how much you leave on.
Not wanting to push you, but just save you from my former fuc#$%^-ups.

There's lots of ways to finish with nitro. Last one I did, I applied a cross coat (one gun pass n/s, a second pass e/w), sanding after each application dried. Over and over, until no more shiny dots after sanding. Took a while, but I was comfortable in the idea that I wasn't applying more finish than the job ultimately needed.

Herman & Peter- Thank you both for the help and advice, I will be applying a lot more coats in future.
As for this particular guitar though, would you spray the entire guitar with more sealer, bearing in mind most of it would be going over the already applied top coat, or can I carry applying more top coats until the bare patches are covered? I suppose what I’m asking is do bare patches have to have sealer first or will top coat be ok?

If you go on with spraying over partially bare wood, it can show in the future.
If that is no issue, then you can put one coat of sealer on the bare part, followed by top coats.
If it is, sand all down and start over. Sorry.

Herman - Thanks again, I don’t think I can face sanding the whole guitar down to bare wood, I’ll guess I’ll have to give a coat of sealer and carry on - fingers crossed
