Any ideas as to function? Could it be from a UFO?

We dug this up in the yard.24" long, rusted metal, one open end like a square socket about 2" on a side; the circular thing slides up and down the central rod.

Well, maybe, Dave. Don't you think it would be made of something that wouldn't rust if it's an anchor for a flying saucer!
