I have the shell in and I'm almost done taking it all down flush. This is the first 2 inch section I planed and scraped.

John I can't afford the GOOD stuff anymore. Been using the laminated shell since I did my first purfling. It's really easy for rosettes where you don't have to break it.
Look up Kashi abalone on Amazon. $9 for a rosette.

looking Good Kev'
I use the laminated stuff too, but the routed slot for the inlay has to made with a perfect depth, to make the inlay flush to the top. If you have to sand off a lot, the colors will alter and maybe cause a problem.
An issue, but otherwise fine product.

Yep Herman. I go .005" deeper for the shell and that leaves room for flooding CA over the top. Scrapes flush with a seal of CA to fill any gaps. Works well for me

Scraping and more scraping. I left to binding .010" proud, .005 more than I usually do. Doesn't look like much but sure is a bunch more to take down.

looking good. When I leave the sides just enough to feel proud, it seems to take forever to get to the bindings.

Thanks John. Easier I think to bring the binding down to the already flat and level sides. Way less material to remove.
It's all done and looks pretty good.
Started the neck today. Using Spanish cedar to keep this guitar a light weight. Cut and glued the scarf joint headstock. I use this very simple jig I made to cut the joint for a 14 degree headstock.
